Internet and Nobel Laureates Listed below are numbers of Internet users per 100 people and numbers of Nobel Laureates per 10 million people (from Data Set 16 “Nobel Laureates and Chocolate” in Appendix B) for different countries. Is there sufficient evidence to conclude that there is a linear correlation between Internet users and Nobel Laureates?

Step 1

The data shows that the number of Internet users and number of Nobel Laureates. The level of significance is α=0.05.

The hypotheses are given below:

*Null hypothesis:*

H0:ρ=0.

That is, there is no linear correlation between the Internet users and Nobel Laureates.

*Alternative hypothesis:*

H1:ρ≠0.

That is, there is a linear correlation between the Internet users and Nobel Laureates.

*Correlation coefficient r:*

*Sample correlation coefficient:*

The value of the sample correlation coefficient (*r*) can be obtained using Excel formula =CORREL(A2:A6,...
