A homozygous red pigmented female beetle (bb) is bred with a black pigmented male of unknown genotype. It’s unknown if the male homozygous dominant (BB) or heterozygous (Bb) for the pigment trait. The color of their offspring will help identify the genotype of the male.

What do you call this method used to determine the genotype of the male beetle? Explain your answer by using Punnett square to show possible offspring genotypes.

The given cross is an example of a test cross.

When a genetic cross is made between a homozygous recessive individual and a phenotypically dominant individual it is known as a test cross. A test cross is used to find the genotype of the phenotypically dominant individual.

A dominant phenotypic character cannot tell the genotype of an organism. Mendel developed the test cross to find the genetic makeup of a dominant organism.

There are two possible outcomes of a test cross:

Case 1: If the dominant phenotype parent is heterozygous for its character, then there is a probability that half of the offspring produced in the test cross will be recessive.
