a. Enzymes increase the rate of reaction by lowering the "activation energy". Activation energy can be defined as the amount of energy required for a chemical reaction to start. The enzyme brings reactants (substrates) together so that less energy is required for the reaction to proceed. Therefore, enzyme-catalyzed reactions occur much faster than they do without an enzyme.
