A tank with a volume of 20.0 L contains 80.0 g of O2 (g) at 37 degrees C. What is the pressure of the gas in atmospheres?

Expert Answer

Step 1

The idea here is that you need to figure out the molar mass of the gas by using its volume under the given conditions for pressure and temperature.

Moles of gas can be calculated as

Mole = 80.0g/32g/mole

          = 2.5 mole

       T= 37+273=310K

Step 2

Our tool of choice will be the ideal gas equation

PV = nRT

  • P is the pressure of the gas
  • V is the volume it occupies
  • n is the number of moles of gas present in the sample
  • R is the universal gas constant, equal to 0821atm L/mol K
  • T is the absolute temperature of the gas

P = nRT/V

   = 2.5mole*0.0821atm L/mol K*310K/20L

   = 63.6275/20

  = 3.1813 atm
