A typical baby aspirin contains 81 milligrams of acetylsalicylic acid. Acute aspirin poisoning may occur if an individual ingests 150 mg of aspirin per kilogram of body weight. How many baby aspirin tablets would a two year old child weighing 25.0 lbs adult have to ingest in order to suffer from aspirin toxicity? (1 kg = 2.20 lbs)

Expert Solution
Step 1

Mass of aspirin tablet = 81 mg

Body weight of child = 25.0 lbs = 25.02.20=11.36 kg

Mass of aspirin can be ingested by child = mass of aspirin ingested per kg body weight x body weight of child

                                                                = ( 150/1 ) x 11.36 mg of aspirin

                                                               = 1704.545 mg of aspirin

Number of baby aspirin tablets = Total mass of aspirin tabletsmass of one aspirin tablet1704.54581 = 21.044

Hence 21 aspirin tablets can be ingested by child to suffer from aspirin toxicity.
