Abduction is the movement of the body parts like limbs away from the body’s side. Adduction is the movement of the body parts towards the body’s midline. Abduction and adduction are opposite of each other. Example – if a person has arms straight at the shoulder and he brings them down, then this is adduction. If the arms of the person are at the midline and he takes them away, then it is abduction.

Muscle that brings about the abduction is called the abductor. The muscle which brings about the adduction is called the adductor. In arm abduction, the prime mover (abductor) is deltoid. If the body now does adduction then the muscles which will work are pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi. These two muscles adduct, extend and internally rotate the arm.
