ACTIVITY 3  A Reading Seismograms Geologists can gather a lot of data from seismogram recordings. In this activity, you will analyze seismograms to glean more data about an earthquake’s location and magnitude. 1. Label the P-waves, S-waves, and surface waves on the seismogram above. 2. How much time elapsed between the first Pand S-waves? Subtract the time of the first P-wave from the time of the first S-wave. 3. Print out the nomogram (Figure 16).

ACTIVITY 3
 A Reading Seismograms

Geologists can gather a lot of data from seismogram recordings. In this activity, you will analyze
seismograms to glean more data about an
earthquake’s location and magnitude.

1. Label the P-waves, S-waves, and surface
waves on the seismogram above.

2. How much time elapsed between the first Pand S-waves? Subtract the time of the first
P-wave from the time of the first S-wave.

3. Print out the nomogram (Figure 16).

4. Mark the S-P time (calculated in Step 2) on
the nomogram. What is the corresponding
distance from the epicenter?

5. The earthquake had an amplitude of 7
millimeters. Mark the amplitude on the right
side of the nomogram.
