A thermodynamic state property which measures the degree of disorderness or randomness of the molecules of the system is known as entropy. It is denoted by S. Entropy is an extensive property.

The entropy tells the randomness present in the system due to its disorderness created in the system as the temperature is raised.

When a sample of matter is converted from solid to liquid then the entropy of the system increases because to convert solid into liquids energy must be supplied to the system. As the energy is raised the molecular motion of particles will increase due to increase in its kinetic energy which in turn increases the disorderness in the system.
