In electrolysis of aqueous solution of NaCl, the solution would simply result in the electrolysis of water, producing oxygen gas at the anode and hydrogen gas at the cathode.  If we construct such a cell, we find that although hydrogen gas is indeed formed at the cathode, oxygen gas is not formed at anode, instead of it, chlorine gas is formed.
