Answer the following in complete sentences in your own words. Copying and pasting from any source will result in a zero. a) Explain the purpose of the Hardy-Weinberg model. Explain as if to an intelligent but non-biology student audience. b) List five conditions that must be met in order for a population to remain in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. C) Explain in one short sentence (or even in one word) what happens when these conditions are not met.

Expert Solution
Step 1

According to Hardy-Weinberg Principle: The Hardy–Weinberg principle, states that allele and genotype frequencies in a population will remain constant from generation to generation in the absence of other evolutionary influences.

p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1 and p + q = 1

p = frequency of the dominant allele in the population
q = frequency of the recessive allele in the population
p2 = percentage of homozygous dominant individuals
q2 = percentage of homozygous recessive individuals
2pq = percentage of heterozygous individuals

Step 2

In easier terms, the Hardy-Weinberg principle states that the genetic variation (differences between organisms or population) stays the same until the population meets disturbing conditions.

That is the species stay the same in every generation both according to the genetic makeup as well as the overall external look.

Disturbances can arise due to unfavorable circumstances in the environment, such as natural disasters wiping off certain species, tragedies like the Chernobyl that caused a heavy and persisting mutation in several generations.
