If O-H group is present in the compound, then it is classified as alcohol. 

If -NH2 is present in the compound, then it is classified as amine.

If -C=O (carbonyl) group is present at the end of the chain, then it is classified as aldehyde, if in between, then it is classified as ketone.

If -COOH is present in the compound, then it is classified as carboxylic acid.
