Step 2: Separating the redox reaction into two half equations. For this, the oxidation number is assigned to each atom.  The element undegoing an increase in oxidation forms oxidation half-reaction and the species undergoing decrease in oxidation number forms reduction half reaction. For assigning oxidation numbers, the oxidation number of oxygen is taken to be -2 and the sum of oxidation numbers of all the elements in the species is equal to the total charge on the species. Also, for an atom in elemental state, the oxidation number is zero.
