Question

Calculate how much lithium bromide (s) would have to be dissolved in DI water in order to make 1.00 mL of a saturated lithium bromide (aq) solution if this salt has a solubility of 286 g/L at 25°C.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given that, lithium bromide (s) would have to be dissolved in DI water lithium bromide (aq) solution. The reaction can be written as :

LiBr(s)  +  H2O    Li+(aq.)  +  Br-(aq.)

At 25°C,

Ksp=Li+Br-

The concentration of Li+ and Br- will be the same.

Let concentration of each be x

Solubility is 286 g/L

Molar mass of LiBr is 86.845 gms.

1 mole of LiBr is 86.845 gms

So, Solubility product = 28686.845=3.29 mol/L
