Question

Consider a 5.00 kg bag of sugar, C12H22O11, and answer the following question. Be sure to show your work:

Calculate the mass of hydrogen, H, Contained in that sugar.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given:  Mass of sugar =5.00 Kg

To Calculate: Mass of H atom contained in the sugar

Step 2

Molar mass of sugar =342.3 g/mol

Moles of sugar = mass of sugar/ molar mass of sugar

                        = 5000 / 342.3

                        = 14.61 mol

1 mol C12H22O11 contains 22 mol H

So, 14.61 mol C12H22O11 contains 22 x 14.61 mol H

                                                     = 321.42 mol H

Mass of H = Moles x Molar Mass of Hydrogen

                =321.42 mol x 1.00784 g/mol

                =323.939 g                     (1000g= 1kg)

                =0.324 kg
