Could you explain to me the saltatory conduction. I don't get what the Na+ and K+ do?

Step 1

An action potential can be defined as a swift rise and succeeding fall in the membrane potential or the voltage through a cellular membrane with a distinctive pattern. In neurons, an action potential has a significant function in cell-to-cell communication.

Step 2

Saltatory conduction:

The transmission of action potentials from one node of Ranvier to the next one along the myelinated axons is known as the saltatory conduction. Saltatory conduction increases the transmission velocity of the action potentials than in a simple circuit (150 m/s than 0.5 to 10 m/s). In myelinated axons, action potentials occur only at the unmyelinated nodes of Ranvier that are located between the myelinated internodes. Due to this restriction, saltatory conduction is faster.

Step 3

Mechanism of saltatory conduction showing the role of sodium and potassium ions:

The nodes of Ranvier (uninsulated) are the barely places in the myelinated axon where the ions are exchanged through the axonal membrane.

These nodes have voltage-gated sodium and potassium ion channe...
