Describe a biofilm and contrast a biofilm from that of normal human microbiota.

Biofilm is a layer of microorganisms growing on a surface. Bacteria, fungi, and protists are known to form biofilms. Biofilms can be found underwater, underground and on the ground. Dental plaque and pond scum are common examples of biofilm.

Normal human microbiota is the population of microorganisms living on the skin and mucous membranes of human body. The human microbiome is the collection of all the microbiota that lives inside or on the surface of tissues and fluids of the body. They provide first line of defense against pathogenic infection.
