Question

Describe hoe Mendel cross-pollinated pea plants.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Mendel chose pea plants because:

  • Pea plants are fast growing
  • Easy to raise
  • They have several visible characteristics that vary
  • They are naturally self pollinating
Step 2

Mendel was interested in offsprings of two different parents plants,so he had to prevent self pollination. He removed the anthers from flowers of some of the plants in experiment. Then he pollinated them by his hand with pollen from other parents of his own choice.

When pollen from one plant fertilizes another plant of same species ,it is called cross pollination.

Offspring resulting from such a cross is called hybrids.
