describe how oxygen and carbon dioxide are transported in the blood.

The blood transports both oxygen and carbon dioxide. The oxygen from the lungs enters the blood and is transported to the cells. Whereas, the carbon dioxide is expelled out of the blood into the lungs, that is, CO2 is carried away from the cells.

The transport of oxygen in the blood occurs in two ways, dissolved in plasma, or bound to hemoglobin.

  • A small amount of oxygen (1.5%) is transported in the plasma as a dissolved gas.
