Griffith experiment was the first experiment which suggested that bacteria are able to transfer genetic material through a process called transformation.

Griffith used two strains of pneumococcus bacteria:

Smooth strain:Virulent and produced a polysaccharide capsule for protection of itself from immune system of host
Rough strain-non virulent and did not have any protective capsule and hence no protection from immune system of host

So steps in the experiment of Griffith are:

S strain bacteria injected into mice and mice died
R strain injected into mice and no death of mice
When Griffith injected heat killed S into mice ,no death occurred
When mixture of heat killed S and live R was injected,death occurred
