Step 1

The female reproductive system carry out many functions.  The internal reproductive organs of a female are vagina, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. The external structures include labia majora, labia minora, Bartholin’s gland, and clitoris.

Step 2

Four main developmental stages that occur during the reproductive cycle of the female are fertilization, implantation, pregnancy, and parturition.

Fertilization: In this process, the male and the female gamete fuse together and form a zygote.  This process takes place in the ampulla of oviduct within few hours of mating. If mating does not occur, the ovum undergoes degeneration and a new ovum is released during subsequent estrus. For each new ovum, fresh copulation is needed. During fertilization, the ovum and the sperm fuse together resulting in the formation of a diploid zygote. The newly formed zygote then develops into an embryo which further develops into a fetus.

Implantation: A process through which the embryo gets attached to the uterus for development is known as implantation. This process takes place after 35 days of fertilization and now the embryo is called a fetus. The placenta is formed following the process of implantation. The placenta is a special structure that connects the fetus with the mother. Also, this structure functions as an endocrine gland and releases hormones such as progesterone and gonadotropins. These hormones are essential to maintain pregnancy.

Pregnancy:  It can be defined as the period in which a female carries a developing fetus. This period lasts for 280 days or 40 weeks. This stage starts from the fertilization of zygote until the delivery of birth of the young one.  Men...
