CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats) is a type of defense mechanism only for the archaea and bacteria. CRISPR protects bacteria against the phages. Phages are viruses, which are parasitic in nature and infect the bacteria. CRISPR defense mechanism destroys the viral DNA as it enters the bacterial cell.

The mechanism by which CRISPR-cas functions to defend the bacterial cell from phages is as follows:

  1. A foreign DNA of a virus or plasmid invades the bacterial cell.
  2. Foreign DNA fragments are captured in the CRISPR locus of a bacterial cell.
  3. The bacterial cell continuously transcribes repeat and spacer groups into pre-crRNA.
