Does a liquid release energy or absorb energy when it changes into a gas?

The process of changing phases takes place by removing or adding thermal energy. When thermal energy is supplies to a substance then the molecules of the substance receives additional kinetic energy (kinetic energy of the molecules increases) that cause the increase in temperature of the substance, and so distance among them and vice versa.
