Step 1

The reaction in which hydrogen and hydroxyl group is added to the compound is known as hydration reaction. Hydration reaction of alkene gives alcohols as the major product.

Step 2

The first reaction is oxymercuration-demercuration reaction. In this reaction, alkene is converted into alcohol in the presence of mercury acetate followed by reduction (with NaBH4). In this reaction, the addition of water takes place via Markovnikov’s addition rule. According to this, for unsymmetrical alkenes, the hydrogen atom is added to that carbon which bears more number of hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl part is added to that carbon which bears lesser number of hydrogen atoms.

In this reaction, vinyl cyclohexane undergoes oxymercuration-demercuration to form 1-cyclohexyl-1-ethanol as the major product.
