How does dissolving a salt molecule in water make its atom ionize ?

Atoms with electrons completely filled in their outermost shell are stable.  Atoms tend to lose or gain electrons to attain complete filled orbitals.  Such atoms are reactive.  For example sodium chloride salt in which sodium loses one outermost electron (to attain stability) to chlorine where it gains the electron.
