How is the direction of an electric field defined?

The direction of field is taken to be the tangent drawn to electric lines of force. The direction of electric field is given by Faraday. The direction of electric field is from positive terminal to negative terminal. The direction of electric field for positive charge is radially outward and for negative charge towards inward. It is an imaginary concept. The number of lines per unit area is directly proptional to electric field.
