How many mL of concentrated nitric acid (HNO 3, 15.0 M) should be diluted with water in order to make 2.00 L of 2.00 M solution?

Molarity of Nitric acid = 15M

Required solution : volume = 2L

                                             Molarity = 2 M

Step 2

M_1 = molarity of stock HNO_3 solution = 15 M

V_1 = volume of stock HNO_3 solution = ?

M_2 = molarity of diluted HNO_3 solution = 2.00 M

V_2 = volume of diluted HNO_3 solution = 2.00 L

Step 3

Apply the formula : M_1V_1=M_2V_2

Substitute the above values and simplify,

15 X V1 = 2 x 2

V1 =  4 / 15

   = 0.266 L

   = 266 mL
