Question

I used the equation (x + 1)2 + (y - 5)2 = -4 to identify the circle’s center and radius.Determine whether the statement makes sense or does not make sense, and explain your reasoning.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The standard equation of a circle is given as:

x-h2+y-k2=r2, where center of circle is h,k and r is radius of circle.

Since, radius is measure of length from center to a point on circumference, so radius can't be negative.

Therefore, r>0r2>0

It is given that center and radius of circle is determined by equation x+12+y-52=-4.

On comparing with standard equation of circle, we get r2=-4 which is not possible.

Therefore, we need to re-simplify the equation of circle and convert them in standar form of circle to find it's center and raidus.
