Various micro-organisms are known to cause severe diseases in humans, plants, and animals. These disease-causing micro-organisms may be bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc. Some of these diseases are treatable with the help of vaccines, while other diseases are very deadly and are not treatable. Treatments like vaccines, drugs are not available for such diseases as coronavirus. Further, the mode of transmission of diseases also adds to the severity of the disease. For example, the disease that transmits through coughing, sneezing, or air droplets affects a more significant proportion of the population as compared to diseases that spread through sexual contact with an infected person.
Micro-organisms are classified into various risk groups on the basis of the severity of diseases caused by them. There are four risk groups in which different micro-organisms are placed. These risk groups are numbered from 1 to 4.
Risk Group 1 includes organisms that are not responsible for causing any disease.
Risk Group 2 includes organisms that cause diseases in humans, but such diseases are entirely curable.
Risk Group 3 includes severe disease-causing organisms. But vaccines and other treatments are available for these diseases.
Risk Group 4 includes organisms that cause various severe and deadly diseases in humans. These can be easily transmitted from one person to another, and there is no such treatment available for these diseases.
