Like several other bonds, carbon-oxygen bonds have lengths and strengths that depend on the bond order. Draw Lewis structures for the following species, and arrange them in order of increasing carbon-oxygen bond strength.

a). HCO3-(H attached to O)

  • The bond order in HCO3- molecule is the average of the bond order of C-O bonds in the resonance where it is bonded by C-O bond to another hydrogen atom and so, they are not part of resonating structures.
  • The resonating of C-O bond has order 1.5 and the non-resonating of C-O bond has order 1.

    Therefore, the bond order of HCO3- molecule is 1.25 and Lewis structure is given as
