Micro-organisms are minute organisms that are not visible to the unaided human eye. Examples include bacteria, algae, fungi, viruses, and protozoans. The micro-organisms are capable of causing  beneficial as well as harmful effects.

Beneficial effects:

  • The micro-organisms play an essential role in maintaining the ecological balance.
  • Some micro-organisms are natural inhabitants in humans and other animals. These organisms are essential for digestion and for the syntesis of certain vitamins such as vitamin K and some B vitamins.
  • Many products are commercially manufactured from the microbes. These products include antibiotics, vitamins, alcohols, organic acids, and enzymes. Example, Aspergillus niger produce amylase.
  • Micro-organisms are also used in the food industries for manufacturing cheese, bread, alcoholic beverages, vinegar, sauerkraut, and yogurt. Example, Saccharomyces cerevisiae ferments dough and is used in bread making.
