Magnesium metal (Mg(s)) burns brightly in oxygen gas (O2(g)) to produce a whitish-grey powder, magnesium oxide (MgO(s)). Write a balanced equation for this reaction.

Expert Answer

Step 1

Balanced chemical equation is defined as a chemical equation in which the product and reactant sides contain equal numbers of atoms of all the chemical species.

Therefore, a chemical equation can be balanced by balancing the numbers of atoms of all the chemical species on the reactant and product sides.

Step 2

The chemical equation for the reaction of magnesium and oxygen is labelled in the equation (1).
