Many colleges require students to receive a vaccination before allowing them to live in their dormitories. Why do you think many colleges require this vaccination and what types of meningitis is this vaccine effective against?

Meningitis is the swelling of the protective membrane (meninges) of the spinal cord and the brain. This is mainly caused due to bacterial infections. Bacteria after entering the body travel to the brain and the spinal cord and invade the meninges, causing acute meningitis. The most common symptoms of this are a severe headache, stiff neck, and sudden high fever.

Meningococcal disease is caused by Neisseria meningitides bacterium. Meningococcus has different serogroups, A, B, C, W, and Y. Out of these serogroups, B, C, and Y are the disease-causing groups. These bacteria are found in the nose and throat of many people. This bacterium can affect the bloodstream and cause meningitis. It is life-threating and needs immediate and proper treatment.
