Sensory receptors:

These are the definite cells, usually neurons, which recognize and react to the chemical and physical stimulus. Each type of sensory receptor sends a different sensory modality to combine into a single signal ultimately.

Most of the sensory receptors are present at the surface of the animal to recognize the external stimuli and others are present inside the body tissues to detect the functions of internal organ.

For example: These receptors are present in specialized organs including the eyes, nose, ears, and mouth, in addition to the internal organs.

Sensory receptors help in the transduction of the signals and transmit them to the central nervous system by the help of its four basic functions.

  1. Sensory reception and transduction:

Sensory receptors help in the reception and transduction of the stimulus.

In reception, the activation of a sensory receptor occurs by a stimulus. In the sensory transduction, the conversion of this sensory signal occurs into an electrical signal. It happens in the sensory neuron.

So, in physiology, the sensory reception and transduction the energy of a stimulus is converted into an electrical signal with the help of sensory receptors.
