Question

"more electrons in bonding orbtials than anti-bonding” describes a bond according to what theory?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Elements are composed of same type of atoms whereas compounds are formed by the combination of different elements. Here atoms of elements are bonded through chemical bonds and they form either ionic or covalent compounds.

Step 2

An ionic bond can be defined as the electrostatic force of attraction between cation and anions. Here cation is a positively charged ion which is formed due to loss of electron whereas an anion is formed by the gain of electrons.

Covalent bond is formed by equal sharing of electrons between bonded atoms and the compounds with covalent bond are called as covalent compound.

Step 3

The Lewis structure does not give any idea about molecular geometry but it purposed the distribution of electrons between bonding atoms. The molecular geometry can be further determine with the help of hybridization and valence bond theory. Lewis dot structure gives the idea about hybridization.

Hybridization and VSEPR theory explain the molecular geometry and bond angle in a molecule. It states that if there is a lone pair on the central atom, the repulsion between lone pairs and bond pairs will change the geometry of molecule.
