SUMMARY:Biology Colloquium |V V Robin
DESCRIPTION:Title: Using continental islands to study ecological and evolutionary patterns in birds\n\nAbstract: In this talk Robin will talk about his use of a continental island system - the Shola Sky Islands to study the ecology and evolution of birds. Mountains are often described as centres of biodiversity. But how does this biodiversity come about? This is the central question that Robin will answer with genetic and acoustic data. He will also highlight\, using remotely sensed data\, how recent changes in the landscape are impacting such biodiversity.\n\nTo join\, please use the link below:\n\n\nhttps://zoom.us/j/92471065101?pwd=ZEw3MXJNYWVJVHZnRjV6Sk1lMjFnQT09\n \nMeeting ID: 924 7106 5101\n Passcode: XRBBhK3z\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker: VV Robin is an Assistant Professor at IISER Tirupati and has been working on birds from for the last 20 years\, much of it on Shola Sky Islands. He has a master's in Ecology from Pondicherry University\, a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from NIAS\, IISc campus\, and a PostDoc at Loyola University\, Chicago. He also has been an NCBS Fellow\, a Salim Ali -Lok Wan Tho Ornithological Fellow\, a Fulbright Scholar\, and a National Geographic Explorer. His research interests broadly cover patterns and processes in ecology\, behavioral ecology\, biogeography\, and evolutionary ecology. He uses bioacoustics\, genetics\, and remote-sensing-based GIS mapping as the main tools for his research\, some of which translates to conservation action. More information on his research is at www.skyisland.in\n\n

SUMMARY:Mathematics Colloquium | R.B. Bapat
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: R.B. Bapat\n\nVisiting Professor of Mathematics\, Ashoka University\n\n \n\nTitle: A glimpse of spectral graph theory\n\nAbstract: Spectral graph theory is the study of the interplay between the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of a graph and the properties of the graph. We present a selection of results from spectral graph theory. These include a result on non-isomorphic cospectral trees\, a problem on decomposing the complete graph on ten vertices by copies of the Petersen graph\, and characterization of nonsingular trees. We conclude by presenting a path-breaking recent proof of the sensitivity conjecture by Huang.\n\n \n\nThe talk will be live-streamed on Youtube. Please watch this space for more updates\n\n \n\nAbout the Speaker: Professor Ravindra B. Bapat obtained his M.Stat. at the Indian Statistical Institute\, New Delhi and Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Chicago. After serving for two years at the University Of Mumbai he joined the Indian Statistical Institute\, Delhi from where he superannuated. In 2019. At present he is INSA Senior Scientist at the same institute.\n\nThe main areas of research interest of Dr. Bapat are combinatorial matrix theory and generalized inverses. He has published more than 160 research papers and has written books on Linear Algebra\, published by Hindustan Book Agency\, Springer and Cambridge University Press. He has also written a book on Mathematics for the general reader\, in Marathi.\n\nDr. Bapat has been on the editorial boards of Linear and Multilinear Algebra\, Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra and Kerala Mathematical Association Bulletin. He has been elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy.\n\nHe was a recipient of the J.C. Bose Fellowship. During 2009-2018. Dr. Bapat was elected president of the Indian Mathematical Society during 2007-2008.
