[References] You have 250. mL of 0.245 M HCl. Using a volumetric pipet, you take 50.00 mL of that solution and dilute it to 100.00 mL in a volumetric flask. Now you take 5.00 mL of that solution, using a volumetric pipet, and dilute it to 100.00 mL in a volumetric flask. What is the concentration of hydrochloric acid in the final solution?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Dilution

The dilution process is the process to change (decrease) the concentration of solution in solution. This process requires a concentrated solution and water. Water is used to increase the amount of solvent so that there will be less number of moles of solute in solution, therefore, decrease the concentration of solute.

Step 2

The formula of dilution is as follows:

M1V1(concentrated soltution)=M2V2(dilute solution)

Where M1 is concentration of concentrated solution, V1 volume of concentrated solution, M2 is concentration of diluted solution, and V2 volume of diluted solution.

Rearrange the above expression to calculate the value of M2.

M2=M1V1V2                                 ...... (1)

For first dilution,

Substitute 0.245 M for M1, 50.00 mL for V1, and 100 mL for V1 in equation (1) to calculate concentration of diluted solution after first dilution.

M2=(0.245 M)(50.00 mL)(100.00 mL)=0.1225M

Therefore after first dilution, the concentration of HCl solution has become 0.1225 M.
