Apart from the openings of eyes, mouth, nostrils, and cloaca, most of the lizards are totally covered with scales. These scales might be smooth and overlapping. These may form an assortment of flat plates, or possess keels or tubercles. The arrangement of scales is different among different species and also by body part. This characteristic is supported due to the presence of more than two alleles.

Multiple alleles mean that there is the presence of more than two alleles which specifically codes for a definite trait in a species.
