Serological reactions are highly specific in nature. Its high specificity is determined by the chemical nature of the antigen and hence it becomes possible to detect and distinguish between complex molecules, particularly proteins which cannot be distinguished by chemical analysis.

Serology contrasts the antigenic components of a cell, which provides information about identification as well as classification of the species. For example identification of a nucleoprotein antigen in streptococci, staphylococci, and pneumococci helped to establish natural relationships between them and further identified their family.
