Question

skin color in humans, caused by serval genes at serveral loci, is an example of

A)incomplete dominance
B)polygenic inheritance
C)pleiotropy
D)epistasis
E)multiple alleles at one locus

Expert Solution
Step 1

Human skin color can range from the darkest brown color to light hues.Differences in the skin color of humans are result of the variation in pigmentation which can be influenced by genetics and exposure to sun or both.Melanin pigment is the major determinant of skin color of humans.Melanin pigments are produced in cells called melanocytes.

Step 2

Polygenic inheritance is also called quantitative inheritance .In polygenic inheritance, single phenotypic trait is regulated by two or more different genes.

Each genes which have the contribution in polygenic trait have an equal influence and each alleles have the additive effect on the result of phenotype.

Skin color is the example of polygenic inheritance.Pigment melanin is responsible for the dark color of skin and there are three genes (at least)which have a control on human skin color.

Polygenic inheritance is different from multiple alleles because in multiple alleles, three or more alleles are present in same locus of which any two alleles are present in an organism.
