Question

Instant coffee is produced by dissolving the soluble portion in boiling water in large percolators which produces two streams – a slurry fed to a cyclone separator and a liquid solution (C) containing 35% S and 65% W. The solution C removed from the grounds in the cyclone separator is mixed with the effluent from the percolators prior to feeding to a spray dryer. In the spray dryer, water is evaporated, leaving the soluble coffee as dry powder at a rate of 500 kg/h. The cyclone separator also produces a slurry containing 20% I and 80% solution C. The slurry is fed to a press removing some of the solution C and a slurry product containing 50% I and 50% C which is then fed to a dryer where the dried grounds are either burned or used as landfill. The dryer produces 1400 kg/h dried product containing 70% I and the balance, S and W. Calculate the flow rate (kg/h) of coffee beans fed to the process, the boiling water mixed with the coffee beans in the percolator
