Expert Solution
Step 1

Diabetic nephropathy is a disease in which kidney is damaged due to diabetes. This is also called as the diabetic kidney disease. When there is an increase in the blood glucose level it results in diabetes and in turn damages the kidney that purify the blood. This damage in the kidney leaks protein in the urine. In some people this diabetic nephropathy leads in kidney failure. Diabetic nephropathy has no symptoms in the early stages. Only the urine tests depict the protein in urine. If there is severe kidney damage, the following symptoms could be seen:

  • Weight loss
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Muscle cramps
  • No appetite
  • Feeling sick
  • More often urination
Step 2

Kidney's main function is to filter the excess water and waste products from the blood so that they can be easily expelled in the form of urine. This is done by the functional and structural unit of kidney called Nephron. The main part of the nephron that act as the filter is glomerulus, a bunch of blood vessels.

When the blood glucose level is high, it interferes with the function of the glomerulus. This leads in the malfunctioning of  filteration process of the kidney and in turn leads to the leakage of protein from blood into the urine. This condition is called glomerulosclerosis. Those who have diabetic nephropathy also have high blood pressure and high blood pressure also leads to kidney damage.
