Using complete subshell notation (e.g., 1s2 2s2 2p6, and so forth, not abbreviations), predict the electron configuration of each of the following atoms.
(a) Mg
(b) Al
(c) Sm
(d) O
(e) Nb

The electronic configuration of any atom is the distribution of its electrons in its atomic orbitals or subshells. Electrons rae arranged in such a manner taht the atom possess the lowest possible energy.

Aufbau Principle is followed to decide the arrangement of these electrons in the atomic orbitals.  According to this principle, the elctrons are filled in the following order-

1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s,3d,4p, 5s, 4d, 5p , 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p .....

a) Therefore electronic configuration for Mg is -

Atomic number of Magnesium is 12. Thus, number of electrons = 12
