Using the appropriate osmotic terms (hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic) describe what would happen to each organism in the following settings:A single-celled freshwater protist is placed into a beaker of salt water. A salt-water snail is mistakenly put into a freshwater tank. A head of lettuce is placed soaked in a sink of salt water. A bunch of carrots are placed soaked a sink of distilled water.

Step 1

Since we only answer up to 3 sub-parts, we’ll answer the first three. Please resubmit the question and specify the other subparts (up to 3) you’d like answered.

Step 2

Osmosis is the process of movement of molecules of solvent from its higher concentration to lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane. The movement of solvent from one medium to another depends on the tonicity (measure of gradient of osmotic pressure) of the two solvents (hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic).

Step 3
  • When a single-celled freshwater protist is placed into a beaker of saltwater, since freshwater is hypotonic to saltwater and the freshwater protist is adapted to freshwater, therefore, the saltwater will be hypertonic to the protist. This will result in movement of water from the cellular fluid of the protist to the outside solution and shrinking of the protist cell.
  • Snail is adapted to survive in saltwater (has tendency of drinking water continuously to maintain the equilibrium in its natural environment) and putting it in a freshwater tank will result in e...
