What advantage and disadvantage does anaerobic fermentation have compared with aerobic respiration?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Respiration is the process of obtaining energy by breaking down simple and digested food material. When this process occurs in the presence of oxygen then it is termed as aerobic respiration. When this process occurs in the absence of oxygen then it is termed as anaerobic respiration.

Step 2

Fermentation is the process of chemically changing an organic substrate using different enzymes. In the narrow sense, it is the process wherein carbohydrates are broken down to obtain energy in the absence of oxygen. Fermentation can be of three types, lactic acid, acetic acid, and ethanol or alcohol fermentation.
