What are some examples of innate defense mechanisms that are chemical in nature? What is complement?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The immune system is complex and is made up of few organs and a broad network of cells and proteins that defend body against the infections and foreign antigen. It also keeps record of every antigen which ever entered in body previosly.

The immune system is categorized into two major types:

1. The innate or nonspecific immunity: It includes the natural barriers and secretion and activation and participation of pre-existent mechanisms.

2.  The adaptive or specific immunity: this immunity against previously recognized antigen or microbes.

When a new pathogen enters the body, it is firstly recognized by the innate immune system and then the adaptive immune response is activated.

Step 2

The fisrt for host defense which is found in all multicellular organisms is the innate immunity. It protects the host from surrounding environment which may contains infectious agents such as bacterias fungi,  viruses and other toxic agents.

When the pathogen enters the body, a signaling cascade is initiated which results in activation of the immune response which further activates specific mechanisms and this natural immune response ensure the following:

  • to prevent infection
  • to eliminate invader pathogens
  • to stimulate the acquired immune response.
