What are the advantages and disadvantages for aldehydes, gaseous sterilizers, peroxygens and organic acids?

Physical and chemical methods are used to control the microbes. Chemical methods are where chemicals are used to treat the surface or equipments in order to kill the microbes. These are often known as disinfectants, sterilizing agents and so on. The chemical methods used must not be a hazard to other organisms and the environment.

The advantages of using aldehydes, gaseous sterilizers, peroxygens and organic acids:

  • They are strong and broad-spectrum in killing microbes.
  • Aldehydes act very quickly on the microbes
  • Gaseous sterilizers are cold sterilizers and can be used for heat-sensitive materials.
  • Peroxygens such as plasms which is a hot, ionized gas are effective in very low concentrations and breaks down to non toxic chemicals.
  • Peroxygens have no associated environmental hazard.
  • They have differential mode of action and hence a combination of one or two kills most of the microbes
  • They affect the cell metabolism, micromolecules such as amino acids, nucleic acids and thus disrupt the vital processes in microbes thus preventing their growth and spread.
  • Cost effective.
  • Instrumentation is not required
  • Can be used in room temperature
  • Requires less skilled labor

  • Aldehydes such as formaldehyde causes skin irritation and are carcinogenic
  • Gaseous sterilizers like ethylene oxides are explosive and carcinogenic
  • Causes permanent damage to eyes, kidney and liver.
  • Peroxygens damages the skin, delays healing and leads to scarring.
