What are the applications for bisphenols, halogens, alcohols and heavy metals?

Physical and chemical methods are used to control the microbes. Chemical methods are where chemicals are used to treat the surface or equipments in order to kill the microbes. These are often known as disinfectants, sterilizing agents and so on. The chemical methods used must not be a hazard to other organisms and the environment.

Applications of bisphenols:

Bisphenols such as triclosan was used in toothpastes initially. These days triclosan is used in soaps, coated on cutting boards, shower curtains, knives, clothing, and concrete. It is highly effective against certain gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and yeasts.

Applications of halogens:

  • Halogens are often used as topical tincture.
  • Povidone-iodine combination is used by physicians to scrub before surgery. It is also used as a topical antiseptic agent before incision.
  • Chlorine is used as disinfectant. It is used to treat drinking water and also used in wastewater treatment plants.
