Latitude and Longitude Assignment

Latitude and longitude simply give a location. The field of Physical Geography depends so much on accurate spatial information to explain underlying patterns. The figure in the link above shows how latitude is really an angle from the center of the earth. The angle is set at 0 degrees at the equator. As you move north or south of the equator, your angle will increase. Therefore, 90 degrees North or South are the greatest angles from the equator.

Now, imagine that you figured out that you were located 38 degrees north of the equator. Does that description tell me where I can find you? No, a line of latitude only describes to us that you are somewhere along that line. You could be in Solano County or the Himalayas. What do you need to describe the exact point where you are located? You need a line to intersect your line of latitude. Where the two lines intersect defines your point, your location.

A line of longitude describes how many degrees from the center of the earth and away from the prime meridian that you are located. The prime meridian has been set to be the 0 degree reference line which cuts through England.

Where the two lines intersect, defines exactly where you are located!

What are the latitude and longitude of Points A through D on the figure in the link above? Please remember latitude is given first and is always north or south of the equator. Then, longitude is given next and is always east or west of the prime meridian.
