Let, the mass of electron be denoted as 'm' , magnitude of electric field be 'E' , acceleration due to gravity be 'g' and charge of electron be 'e' 

 

It is known that weight(W) of a particle always acts in the downward direction and its value is = mg

Now, to balance this weight , an equal amount of force(F) is required to be applied in the upward direction.

It is known that the amount of force experienced by an electron in an electric field is :

F = eE

 and its direction is opposite to that of the electric field. So, to produce force in upward direction, the electric field must be directed in downward direction.
