What color of light is least effective in driving photosynthesis?

check_circle

Expert Answer

Step 1

Plants convert light energy into the chemical energy during photosynthesis. Photosynthesis occurs in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts, which capture the light from the Sun and then convert the light energy into the chemical energy. Generally, photosynthetic organisms (for example, autotrophs) utilize the light energy for the synthesis of sugars as well as other organic compounds. Such compounds serve as fuel for the cellular respiration in plants.

Step 2

The green color of light is the least effecting in driving photosynthesis. Usually, photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll) absorb the visible light (380 to 740 nm wavelength), however, do not absorb the green light. This is because the green light is transmitted and reflected instead of absorbed by the chlorophyll. Plants are green in color due to the presence of chlorophyll, as this color is refl...
